Designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones in the 1970’s the 36 holes at Mijas Golf, Los Lagos and Los Olivos, have matured into arguably the finest golf resort in southern Spain. Over the last forty years Mijas Golf have forged a close relationship with La Zambra Hotel, formerly the Byblos, and have jointly entertained the brightest and biggest names in modern European history, including Diana the Princess of Wales, Julio Iglesias, Rod Stewart and of course, our own Dr Charlie Ward, who has been a regular patron for almost 30 years.
The golf courses at Mijas Golf meet the design mantra that defines what a great golf course should be, hard par, easy bogey.
Los Lagos is a tournament style course of 7200 yards, a leviathan sculpted in verdant hues of green. Broad rolling fairways and vast, gently undulating greens make this a challenge that will arduously test the elite and at the same time bring huge satisfaction to the humble amateur! Natural lakes and water features adorn 10 of the holes giving Los Lagos its name.
Los Olivos is the perfect foil to its big brother. Shorter in length than Los Lagos with narrower fairways often lined with the ancient Olive trees from which the course is named, Los Olivos is a great equaliser. Power players have an advantage on Los Lagos, whereas Los Olivos rewards accuracy and finesse. Los Olivos meets the Trent Jones design criteria of hard par – easy bogey but in a different style. Many of the greens are elevated and protected by a large number of greenside bunkers. A set of robust short game skills are essential to build a good score. Los Olivos is a pretty golf course, it will reward conservative play and will defend itself from marauding attackers. This is one of Charlie’s favourite golf courses on the Costa del Sol.
